Terracotta bullheads and a statue of Eros, the Greek god of love and sex, riding a dolphin were discovered during the excavations.
According to the sky news (word beyond the scale), it is the first place where the artifacts were found from a sanctuary which dates back to 5 BC. The ancient city, famous for its three-columned Doric temples that display many famous structures from ancient Greece – such as the Parthenon in Athens, is located near the archaeological site of Pompeii in the southern Italian region of Campania.
The small temple was first discovered in 2019 next to the old city walls but excavations have been stopped due to the pandemic, the report added citing the Italian Ministry of Culture.
According to Italian cultural center officials, these new discoveries will shed new light on what religious life was like in an ancient city.
The seven heads of the bulls found were placed around the temple altar in a gesture of peace, while the Eros statue seems to have come from a family of specialists called Avilis, whose presence in Paestum has not been previously documented.
