Eight people died and several were injured in separate shooting incidents reported in three American cities on Tuesday. The latest of several shootings was reported in the city of Half Moon Bay in California in which four people lost their lives and three were seriously injured, according to local media reports.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect in the incident that was reported near Highway 92 is in custody and there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.
The Sheriff’s Office previously said it “responded to a shooting incident with multiple victims in the area of HWY 92 and HMB City limits.”
“The suspect is in custody. There is no ongoing threat to the area at this time,” he added.
Two students were killed and a senior staff member was injured in what police said was a targeted attack at a Des Moines school dedicated to helping at-risk youth. AP reported. The shooting took place at an education program called Start Right Here that is affiliated with the Des Moines school district. Police said officers stopped a vehicle matching witnesses’ descriptions about 20 minutes after the shooting and took three suspects into custody.
“We are saddened to hear about another act of gun violence, especially one that affects an organization that works so closely with some of our students. We are still waiting to learn more details, but our thoughts are with the victims of this incident and their families and friends,” the Des Moines school district said in a statement.
Meanwhile, two people died and three others were seriously injured in a home invasion attack at a Chicago apartment building Monday afternoon, authorities said. Several suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made, police said.
“It does not appear to be a random act,” Deputy Police Chief Sean Loughran said during a news conference.
