The Internet is widely condemning the practice saying that it diminishes the need for traditional education.

The photo was posted on Instagram by @notahomebody on Saturday and the person tagged in the post has since deleted their account, according to the New York Post.

A Hawaiian activist, Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, strongly condemned the act. He said, “Halemaumau Crater has great symbolism and meaning to people, which is why they live on the post.”

“Many foreigners don’t understand how we Hawaiians feel about our relationship to the places and places here on the islands we live,” he added.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park released a statement on the controversial action. “Not only does this seem to demonstrate the improper disposal of human waste in a developed environment, which is in violation of Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, but it also demonstrates a lack of understanding and disregard for the cultural significance of Kilauea, ” the statement said.

According to the report, Kilauea is home to Pele, the Hawaiian god of fire and volcanoes.

Similar embarrassing incidents have surfaced online in the past as well. In November, a man posted a video of himself on Mauna Kea, though he issued an apology after a huge backlash.
