Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in his quest to ensure provision of social services to the people has assured residents of Abeokuta and its environs that the acute shortage of water supply currently being experienced, would soon be a thing of the past, as government was committed to tackling the challenge head-on.
Prince Abiodun who stated this in an interview with newsmen after inspecting Abeokuta Main Water Scheme, Arakanga and the Old Water Scheme at Iberekodo, in Abeokuta North Local Government Area, also promised to extend the gesture to residents of other parts of the State.
He said the inspection became necessary to assess the current situation of the Water Schemes, towards ameliorating the inability of the State Water Corporation to supply water, particularly in the State capital, as there had been series of meetings with officials of the agency on how best to overcome the challenges.
“We are assessing the situation as it concerns the State Water Corporation to ensure adequate water supply in Ogun State, particularly Abeokuta. There had been series of meetings on how to resolve the problem, so that people can get water, not just in Abeokuta, but other parts of the State”, he noted.
The Governor while attributing the current problems of the corporation to include; lack of modern equipment, inadequate power supply, lack of maintenance culture and general abandonment of the water scheme, said government had liaised with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority to release water, as well as, Ibadan Electric Distribution Company to supply power to the scheme, adding that with the steps taken, water would be supply to the people very soon.
Governor Abiodun listed Ipokia, Ikenne, Ago-Iwoye, Odogbolu and Ijebu-Ode, as some of the areas with water problems, saying, government was looking at quick fix approach in rehabilitating the borehole pumps in the areas, in order for residents to have access to clean water.
The General Manager of the Corporation, Mr. Oluseye Maku, explained that for the State to have uninterrupted water supply, there was need for comprehensive overhaul of the various water Schemes, as some of the pipes that supply water to various homes have rusted and needed replacement.
