Almost 2 million Ukrainians have been provided with special financial assistance

Stéphane Dujarric described the direct transfer of money, mostly to those who have been displaced and lost their jobs because of the conflict, as “a continuation of special assistance that we, together with our partners, have provided in many regions of Ukraine”.

He said that last year, some six million people across different parts of Ukraine were provided with money, and this year more than $200 million has been raised to help Ukrainians meet their basic needs.

“This is made possible by the urgent effort of [more than] 20 participantswith the UN organization, national non-governmental organizations and international non-governmental organizations as well”, said Mr. Dujarric.

One billion goals

He added that the overall goal, is to provide financial assistance to around 4.4 million peoplemoving close to $1 billion in total.

And in general, humanitarians hope to provide such relief to more than 11 million of the nearly 18 million people in need of assistance in Ukraine.

“From this conclusion, we and our partners request $3.9 billion for the response”, the UN Spokesperson continued. “So far, we have received a total of $900 million so we count on the international community to support the humanitarian response in the country, as the war continues to drive a major humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, especially in the east and the south

Over the weekend, the UN managed to provide shelter materials and other essentials to more than 1,500 people in an area along the Dnipro River in Kherson region.

It is the first time that aid workers have managed to reach the area just a few meters from the front line, “where the level of destruction is terrible”, according to the UN humanitarian program office (OCHA) in Ukraine.
