‘Angry’: Biden after Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed the Brazilian prez’s palace | World news
US President Joe Biden on Sunday said the situation in Brazil was “angry” after supporters of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Parliament, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court.
Leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro in the strongest election in a generation last year, announced a government security intervention in Brasilia that will last until January 31 after the capital’s security forces the beginning was overcome by the opposition.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States condemns any effort to undermine democracy in Brazil.
“President Biden is following the situation closely and our support for Brazil’s democratic institutions is unwavering. Brazil’s democracy will not be shaken by violence,” Sullivan said on Twitter.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter that the United States joins Lula in calling for an immediate end to the attacks.
The violence echoes the attack on the US Capitol two years ago by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
“I condemn this outrageous attack on #Brazilian government buildings fueled by demagogue Bolsonaro’s reckless disregard for democratic principles,” US Senator Bob Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Twitter.
“2 yrs since January 6, the Trump legacy continues to poison our community. Protecting democracy & holding bad actors to account is imperative.”
