At least five killed in a gun attack in Iran: News | World news

At least five people were killed in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan on Wednesday in what state media described as a terrorist attack.

Iranian state TV said 15 other people were injured in the attack at the market in the city of Izeh. The semi-official ISNA news agency said two gunmen in a car opened fire on the crowd.

Iran’s Arab minority, who live mostly in Khuzestan, have joined weeks of protests sparked by the death in custody of young Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on September 16.

“Five people were killed in the terrorist attack, including a child, a woman and three men,” district official Valiollah Hayati told state TV.

ISNA said two members of the Basij volunteer group of Iran were among those killed.

Last month, Islamic State claimed responsibility for an attack on a shrine in the Iranian city of Shiraz that killed 15 people and injured dozens.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency said the seminary in Izeh was burned down by pro-government protesters. Videos on social media, which could not be verified by Reuters, showed the building on fire while gunshots could be heard.

The protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Amin while in Iranian-style police custody have turned into one of the boldest challenges to the clerical leader since the 1979 revolution.

Iranians continued anti-government protests on Wednesday despite escalating civil unrest, social media reports showed. Iranian authorities have accused foreign enemies of inciting the unrest to undermine the Islamic republic.
