British tabloid ‘The Sun’ apologizes for ‘hateful’ article on Meghan Markle World news

British tabloid The Sun on Friday said it regretted publishing a book by former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson about Prince Harry’s wife Meghan after a huge backlash.

In the article for The Sun last week, Clarkson wrote that she “hated” Meghan and dreamed of the day “when she was made to strip naked on the streets of every city in England while people chanted, ‘Fuck !’ and throw garbage at it.”

A record number of complaints against the book – more than 20,000 – were made to the UK Independent Press Standards Organization (Ipso) and many high-profile figures criticized the article, including author Philip Pullman and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The article was written in response to the couple’s recent Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan” but has since been removed from the newspaper’s website.

“We at The Sun regret publishing this article and we are sincerely sorry,” The Sun said in a statement on its website.

The Sun removed the article on Monday from its website at the request of Clarkson who said on Twitter that it made “a stupid reference to an episode in Game of Thrones and that went down badly with a lot of people”. .

He added: “I am sorry to have caused so much harm and I will be more careful in the future.”

In one of the most famous scenes in Game of Thrones, a female character does a “walk of shame” where she is forced to walk naked down the street as people throw trash at her.

“Writers’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher, we know that with free expression comes responsibility,” The Sun said.

In the Netflix documentary, Harry and Meghan accuse the UK tabloid press of racism, of trying to “destroy” her and of contributing to her pregnancy through a targeted campaign spread by palace briefings.
