More than 130 seals found dead on the Caspian coast in Kazakhstan World news
More than 130 endangered seals remain on the Kazakh shores of the Caspian Sea, officials said Wednesday.
“We have found the carcasses of the dead seals,” a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s environment ministry told AFP.
His ministry said 131 seals had been found dead on the shores of the Caspian in the west of the country.
Drills will be carried out and Kazakh environmental experts say that soil and water samples from the area will be analyzed.
The Caspian seal, the only species found in the Caspian Sea, the largest freshwater body in the world, was placed by the Kazakh government in November 2020 on the list of endangered species.
The Caspian Sea, the largest body of water in the world, is bordered by five countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan.
The leading inhabitants of the Caspian Sea have suffered for many years and the effects of industrial pollution.
Experts say there are now 68,000 Caspian seals, up from more than a million in the early 20th century.
