Controversial Buckingham Palace aide: Rishi Sunak says “racism must be tackled” | World news

Following a debate at Buckingham Palace over “racist” comments, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Thursday said that while the country had made “progress in tackling racism”, “it still must be tackled”. Speaking to Sky News, Sunak declined to comment on the incident directly but said he had experienced racism growing up in Britain, Reuters news agency reported.

“The racism I experienced as a child and teenager I never thought would happen today because our country has made incredible progress in addressing racism. But the work is not impossible and that is why every time we see it we must face it and it is right that we always learn and go to a better future,” said Sunak.

On Thursday, a member of the Buckingham Palace family resigned after making “unacceptable” comments at a reception by Queen Consort Camilla. According to Ngozi Fulani – the chief executive of Sistah Space and a prominent black advocate for survivors of domestic abuse, a family member asked her where she “really came from” during the incident.

According to British media, the royal aide has been identified as Lady Susan Hussey – the 83-year-old godmother of King Charles’ son and heir Prince William.

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace said in a statement that they have taken the incident “extremely seriously and have immediately launched an investigation to establish the details.”

“In this instance, we have made comments that are unacceptable and very disturbing. We have contacted Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all aspects of her experience in person if she wishes,” the statement read.

“At this time, the person concerned would like to apologize deeply for the harm caused and has renounced his honor with immediate effect. All members of the Family are reminded of the diversity and inclusiveness principles which they need to support at all times,” he added.
