IOM says civilians have been killed or forced to flee their homes due to widespread violence and attacks by armed groups.
Deadly attack, unbearable dangers
At least 46 people were killed in the latest incident at a camp for displaced people in eastern Ituri region on Sunday.
The IOM condemned the attack, which was reportedly carried out by Coopérative pour le développment du Congo (CODECO), a coalition of armed forces.
“This recent horrific attack is a testimony to the unbearable dangers displaced people in the DRC face every day,” said Federico Soda, Director for the Department of Emergencies.
“IOM strongly opposes this heinous violation of international humanitarian law and recalls that it is an attack on civilians can be a war crime. A collective effort is desperately needed to end the violence and help the Congolese people find peace.”
The humanitarian situation worsened
As the conflict escalates, the humanitarian situation continues to worsen, with millions facing severe food insecurity and other critical needs. In total, more than 26 million people across the DRC are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Despite insecurity, and limited access to parts of the country, IOM and its partners are trying to provide emergency relief to people forced and affected by violence.
The UN agency says it is step-up operations which will enable a more effective crisis response to the humanitarian emergency caused by the operation in violence.
