Ogun state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that the poor state of Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital is worst than deplorable, Promising to set up committee to bring back the lost glory of the hospital.
The governor stated this during his inspection visit to the state teaching hospital on Sunday
He noted that the said buildings and facilities in the hospital are sub-standard.
” the report i received about the hospital is disheartening, saying that was what prompted my visit”
”My government would set up a committee which would comprises of stakeholders and practitioners in the health sector to bring back the old glory of the teaching hospital”
According to him, this hospital at a point in time was the best teaching hospital in this country and the faculty of medicine was number one in the country, but, today we lost accreditation.
“This visit was informed by my meeting with sector heads in the ministry of health like the Permanent Secretary, Medical Directors of different hospitals and the members of the management board.
“And this being the first and only teaching hospital in this state and from the report that they gave me which was very disheartening. I thought I should come and see things for myself.
“This place is sub-standard, I am going to sit down and look at how best this place would start working perfectly.
“It is worst than deplorable and I intend to immediately put together a team of both consultant and members of the sector as well after I get a formal report from the medical director and his team.
“I would set up a team to immediately begin how to look at that approach that would make this place be functional as it should be”.
Also, the chairman of the Medical Advisory committee to the Teaching Hospital, Dr Oluwabunmi Fatungbase claimed the hospital has contracted space and low personnel.
She appealed to the governor to provide building facilities for the hospital so as to meet up with its daily challenges.
She added, “The medical facilities started years back as a general hospital and we have probably about 100 beded at that time, but, when we started teaching hospital, our facility was expanded and we have about 310 bedded now.
“You cannot imagine having facility from 100 to 300 bedded, it is over used and over exhausted.
“We have contracted space, we need to expand, we need more equipment to treat patient.
“Our in-patient is between 7,000 to 8,000, but, the same number of personnel that have been managing the old 100 bedded are the same one we have.
“We need more personnel, we need more infrastructure and more equipment to work with to be able to serve the Ogun state citizenry”.
