Incident of 6.1 magnitude rock Indonesia’s West Java | World news
A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s West Java region on Saturday, the country’s geophysics agency BMKG said, sending people out of homes.
The earthquake did not have tsunami potential, the agency said. It is felt in the capital Jakarta, around 200 km from the center.
One person was injured and four houses were damaged in the city of Garut, said Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster management agency (BNPB).
Some residents of other towns and cities in West Java said on social media they felt the earthquake strongly. A Reuters witness in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, said that guests of a hotel had left the building but had since returned inside.
Last month, a shallow earthquake of magnitude 5.6 hit Cianjur West Java, killing more than 300.
The head of BNPB, Suharyanto, told local news channel MetroTV that the authorities were also conducting checks in other places near the center on Saturday.
“Hopefully the impact is not as bad as Cianjur because this time the epicenter is deep,” he told MetroTV.
The measure was initially reported at 6.4 with a depth of 118 km (73 miles) and was later updated with a depth of 109 km.
BMKG reported a 2.9 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 107 km struck near the first quake an hour later.
