Iran: 40 people killed in protests last week – OHCHR

The development comes amid ongoing nationwide protests over the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini.

Spokesman Jeremy Laurence said: “At least six people linked to the protests have been sentenced to death on charges of ‘moharebeh’, or ‘fighting against God’, or ‘efsad-e fel-arz’, or ‘corruption on the ground’, spokesman Jeremy Laurence said. .

“A growing number of people, including Iranian celebrities and sportswomen and men who have supported the protests, have been invited or arrested”, he added.

According to the OHCHR, security forces reportedly responded “forcefully” to demonstrations in several Kurdish areas on Monday evening, including Javanrud and Saqqez, Amini’s hometown.

Two 16-year-old boys were among six people killed over the weekend, according to the UN rights office, which noted that more than 300 people have lost their lives, including 40 children, since the The national announcement was issued on 16 September.

Families deny the bodies of relatives

OHCHR also expressed concern that authorities have refused to release the dead to their families, or release them “conditionally” because they have not spoken to the media.

“With bodies not being returned to their families, that’s certainly a big concern to us,” Mr Laurence said.

“What’s the reason behind that, I’m not sure. But families have the right to have their loved ones’ bodies returned to them. It is cruel that they are not.”

Mr. Laurence noted that the security forces’ approach has been tough on the protesters, who have been killed in 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, including more than 100 in Sistan and Baluchistan.

He urged the authorities to address people’s demands for “equality, dignity and rights” – instead of using arbitrary force against demonstrators.

“The lack of accountability for serious human rights violations in Iran continues and is contributing to growing grievances”, said the OHCHR spokesperson.

Iranian authorities have also reported that a number of security personnel have been killed since the beginning of the protests.
