North Korea fires a ballistic missile into the sea, South Korea says | World news

North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast on Saturday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Japan’s coast guard also said South Korea fired what may have been a ballistic missile.

The shooting comes after North Korea threatened on Friday an “unprecedented, strong” response as South Korea and the United States prepare for annual military exercises as part of efforts to counter the North’s nuclear and missile threats. Pyongyang may have created a military unit tasked with operating new intercontinental ballistic missiles, in line with the military’s recent reorganization, state media video footage from a February 9 parade suggests.
