One Killed, 11 Escape Death In Ogun Road Crashes

One person was reported to have died while 11 others escaped death in multiple accidents that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Ogun State on Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the Lagos-Ibadan highway crash involved 10 persons with one dead and two injured.

Also, the Abeokuta-Sagamu highway crash reportedly involved two persons who escaped death after their vehicle skidded off the highway due to a mechanical fault.

The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed this to PUNCH Metro in a phone conversation on Wednesday.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident involved five vehicles, including an IVECO truck with number plate DED541XB, an IVECO tanker with number plate RSH 319 XF, an unregistered DAF truck, an unregistered Mack containerised truck, and a Peugeot J5 bus with number plate EPE 250 YD.

The TRACE spokesperson disclosed that the accident was caused by the impatience of the drivers and excessive speeding.

The fuel tanker overturned and occupied a larger percentage of the road, thereby causing traffic for road users.

Akinbiyi said, “Ten persons were involved in the accident comprising four vehicles. One of the victims died while two others sustained varying degrees of injury.

“According to an eyewitness, the accident was caused as a result of impatience, excessive speed and loss of control on the part of the DAF truck’s driver.”

He further disclosed that the injured victims were taken to the nearest hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps while the deceased victim was recovered by family members.

“Two injured victims were rescued to Famobis Hospital by FRSC, while the presumed dead body was taken care of by his relative,” he added.

Meanwhile, the accident along the Kobape area was said to have occurred after the vehicle developed a mechanical fault which led it to skid off the road.

“The accident involved two male persons and there were no injuries. It was caused by mechanical faults which resulted in the vehicle losing control according to the driver,” he said.
