Recommit to Libya ceasefire, urges UN chief

On Monday, Abdoulaye Bathily, who is also the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, urged the government to allocate the necessary resources, step up political efforts to end the blockade, and re-establish the law against companies Libyan through the elections.

‘Spirit of Unity’

Since the 2011 takeover of former dictator Muammar Gadaffi, oil-rich Libya has descended into a series of conflicts that have divided the country between rival administrations – the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital Tripoli, and personal. -styled Libyan National Army (LNA), led by General Khalifa Haftar.

Mr. Bathily, who chaired the two-day meetings, praised the JMC – military representatives from the opposition parties, called 5 + 5 – for “determination and commitment to peace and stability in Libya and its unity and integrity.”

And he called on the political leaders “to show the same spirit of unity and indifference as their brothers in uniform in the Joint Military Council in order to overcome the current crisis”.

‘An instrument of hope’

The UN chief also reiterated the UN’s support to the JMC and the relevant Libyan institutions in their efforts to consolidate the military and security institutions and withdraw the terrorists, which is in line with the plan of action to maintain Libya’s regional stability .

Furthermore, he emphasized the need to identify ways to make neighboring countries end the presence of these forces on Libyan soil and called on the international community to support the 5 + 5 JMC as “an instrument of hope for all Libyan citizens” .

Among other things that were said at the meeting, the JMC spoke about addressing the armed groups with the aim of creating a favorable environment for peace and sustainable security in Libya.

The final meeting was attended by a team of inspectors from the UN Office that worked to assess how UNSMIL is implementing the recommendations of the Independent Review of the Constitution made last year.

The review aims to improve the Mission’s mandated activities to better meet the aspirations of the Libyan people and institutions for peace and stability.
