Sudan: Initiation of final phase to civil law is ‘important step’

Military and civilian leaders began meeting in the capital Khartoum, on Sunday, for four days of talks aimed at reaching an agreement on governance in the two-year period before elections.

Building on progress

“This action is based on progress made on signing the Political Process Agreement on 5 December 2022, and mark another important step further realizing the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democracy, peace and sustainable development,” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

The strategic agreement follows months of negotiations in the wake of the 25 October 2021 military coup, which led to a transition to civilian government.

Before the uprising, military and civilian leaders shared power in a transitional government established after long-time Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was ousted in April 2019.

Broad participation is essential

The United Nations, the African Union (AU) and the International Organization for Development (IGAD) have a tripartite framework that has mediated between the parties.

The organization reiterated its commitment to support the process and to help secure a final political agreement in the coming weeks.

“To ensure a lasting solution, the Secretary-General emphasizes the importance of including the widest range of Sudan’s partners, including women, youth, and civil society,” said Mr. Dujarric.

The UN chief also urged major donors who did not sign the December 5 Agreement to join the political process.

He also emphasized the importance of strong international support and coordination to the political process under the Strategic Mechanism.
