The UN chief condemned the airstrike that killed at least 22 people in Sudan
Mr. Guterres expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed his hopes for a speedy recovery to the dozens injured, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said in a statement issued that day.
The Sudanese army and a rival militia group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have been fighting since mid-April. Hundreds of people have been killed and nearly three million displaced, including to neighboring countries.
Mr. Haq said the Secretary-General was shocked by reports of widespread violence and injuries throughout Darfur.
Fears of civil war
“He is also concerned about reports of renewed fighting in North Kordofan, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States. Total disregard for humanitarian law and human rights is dangerous and disturbing,” he added.
The UN chief is also very concerned that the ongoing war between the factions has pushed Sudan to the brink of a full-scale civil war, which could destabilize the entire region.
Mr. Guterres reiterated his call for the Armed Forces of Sudan and the RSF to stop fighting and commit to a cessation of hostilities.
“It also urges these parties to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians and to enable humanitarian action,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the UN continues to push for the unity of international efforts under the aegis of African Unity, and welcomes the strong commitment of the East African group IGAD.
