UN peacekeeping turns 75: Photo exhibition opens at UN Headquarters

“For 75 years, UN Peacekeeping Missions have helped end conflict, protect civilians, advance political solutions, and secure sustainable peace,” said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.
“They are peacemakers ordinary people work in difficult and dangerous conditions to achieve extraordinary results for the communities they serve,” he said. “The results of their efforts to help countries navigating the difficult path from war to peace We can see countries like Liberia, Namibia, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and Timor-Leste.”
Part of a year-long global campaign, the show’s theme is “Peace begins with me” seeks to show the mighty violence of UN peace and its partners on the world of millions of people were involved in the conflict.
Introduction a curated collection of peace in action from the first deployment of military observers to the Middle East in 1948, to the 12 missions currently in operation, the photographs document complex and diverse work carried out by peacekeepers in some of the world’s most fragile political and security situations.
From UN protection of civiliansCamps that saved thousands of lives in South Sudan to elections in DR Congo and special demining activities in Cyprus, the photos captured indispensable support that ‘blue helmets’, the police, and civil peacekeepers provide for communities in need.
“We are not alone in our efforts” UN peacekeeping chief said. “Many partners work together with us in a joint effort for peace, including local communities, women and youth, civil society, humanitarians, host governments, military and police intervention countries and Partner Countries . We thank them for their support throughout the history of peace and urge them to continue that commitment The challenges we face are greater than ever.”

Health care at 75
The exhibition “Peace Begins With Me” opened on Monday at the General Assembly Inspectorate at the UN Headquarters in New York and will be on display until June 6. The exhibit, also available online here, highlights the peacekeepers’ sacrifices, their myriad achievements, and their legacy. Here are some important contributions of the UN peacekeeping coalition.
- UN Peacekeeping operations encompass activities that cover civilian security, conflict prevention, and the promotion of human rights.
- UN peacekeeping missions are also mandated to provide field support, empower women, and buttress security institutions in the countries they operate.
- Since 1948, more than two million peacekeepers from 125 countries have served, in 71 different missions.
- By 2023, more than 87,000 women and men work to build peace in hot spots across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
