Where our children can light their diyas…: Rishi Sunak’s Diwali Wishes from Number 10 | World news

After receiving power from his predecessor Lizz Truss, the new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak attended a Diwali reception at 10 Downing Street on Wednesday night. In addition to wishing everyone Diwali, Sunak pledged to do “everything I can in this job to build a Britain where our children and our grandchildren can light their Diya.” He also shared a picture of himself attending a Diwali reception at his official residence.

“Great to drop into tonight’s Diwali collection at No10,” Sunak posted on Twitter. “I will do everything I can in this job to build a Britain where our children and our grandchildren can light their Diya and look to the future with hope. Happy #Diwali everyone!”

On Tuesday, Rishi Sunak became the new UK Prime Minister after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, writing history with many firsts – the first person of Indian origin to lead the UK, the first Hindu, non-white to become UK PM. He was also the first British Prime Minister to be sworn in under their new King Charles III.

In his statement from 10 Downing Street, Sunak said he was singled out for the mistakes of his predecessor but also praised him saying “I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss. It is not wrong to want to improve the development in this. Country. It was a noble decision and I admired his inability to create change but some mistakes were made, not of bad intentions but mistakes nonetheless.”

He vowed to earn the trust of the British people and said his government would be stable, efficient and accountable at all levels.

“I stand here before you ready to lead our country into the future, to put your interests above politics, to reach and build a government that represents the best traditions of my party. Together we can achieve amazing things,” Sunak said.
