Vacate Flood Prone Areas, OGSG Warns Residents
A call has gone to all residents of buildings constructed on erosion channels, water ways, river banks, streams and other flood prone areas of Ogun state to vacate their buildings as the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning and Urban and Regional Planning Board will soon embark on demolition exercise to avoid disaster.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, Mr Nafiu Adebiyi made this call in Abeokuta during the ongoing enumeration of houses built on affected areas.
Mr. Adebiyi said the purpose of the exercise was to count and identify houses that have contravened specific law of urban planning rules of the state.
He noted that constructing houses close to rivers or water ways could endanger people’s lives, adding that ultimate sanction for contravening the building law would be applied to guard against such occurrence.
“All derelict buildings and those built on water ways would be demolished, we don’t want people to bring disaster upon themselves that is why we ask them to vacate such buildings and thereby bring them down” He said.
While explaining the demolition process, Mr. Adebiyi said that contravention notices would be served on occupants of such buildings to vacate the premises failure of which the Ministry would place demolition notice before such building is finally demolished.
