Determined to combat open defecation, the Ogun State Ministry of Environment has sealed four houses at Igbore and Isale-Ake areas of Abeokuta, at the expiration of 21 days Abatement Notice served on them which they failed to comply with.
Leading the team of Environmental Health Workers, the Director Environmental Health Management, Sanitarian Bhuri Jokosenumi, explained that the four houses would remain sealed until they construct toilets, as well as pay appropriate fine levied against them, saying toilet was a fundamental part of a building approval, which must be strictly adhere to.
Jokosenumi stressed that government would continue to sensitize the public on the hazards of open defecation, as Nigeria is ranked second behind India in open defecation, calling on landlords to comply with the National Environmental Health practise Regulation of 2016.
He warned other landlords whose houses are without toilets to make provision for such immediately or have their houses sealed, reiterating that the exercise is continuous and not limited to a local government or zone.
