Islamic State leader Abu Hasan al-Qurashi killed, the successor names | World news

The Islamic State group (ISIS) said on Wednesday that its leader Abu Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi had been killed in the battle and announced a coup, AFP reported.

A spokesman for the terrorist group said that Hashimi, an Iraqi, was killed “in a fight with the enemies of God”, without detailing the date of death or the circumstances. Speaking in an audio message, the spokesman identified the group’s new leader as Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi.

Qurashi refers to the tribe of the Prophet Mohammed, from whom ISIS leaders must claim descent.

After a meteoric rise in Iraq and Syria in 2014 that saw it conquer large areas, ISIS saw its own “caliphate” crumble under a wave of outrages.

It was defeated in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria two years later, but the sun cells of the Sunni Muslim extremist group also carried out attacks in both countries and claimed attacks elsewhere in the world.

The former leader of ISIS, Abu Ibrahim al-Qurashi, was killed earlier this year in a US strike in the Idlib province in northern Syria.

Its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed, also in Idlib, in October 2019.
