The extent of injuries in the attack at the University of Waterloo’s Hagey Hall was not immediately known. The injured were taken to the hospital.

One person was taken into custody, police said. Authorities did not provide a motive for the attack and said more details would be released as they become available.

Yusuf Kaymak, a student at the University of Waterloo, told CTV News that the attack happened in a male studies class.

“The guy basically came in and asked the teacher if he was a professor, he said ‘yes’ and then he pulled a knife and after that, everyone just ran out,” Kaymak told CTV.

“I ran out, after we went outside, there was a boy who was stabbed with a knife. He is bleeding (from) his arm. I don’t know what happened to the professor,” he said.

Kaymak said there were 40 students in the class at the time.

Authorities said to expect an increased police presence “as officers continue to clear homes and ensure public safety.”

The University of Waterloo said in a tweet that it is supporting police in their investigation. He said there was no further danger to the campus.

Classes scheduled for Wednesday evening in Hagey Hall have been canceled, but all other campus activities will continue as usual, the university said in a tweet.
