The accounts show the royal family spent £2.7million on gas and electricity last year, up from £1.4million in the previous 12 months. At Windsor Castle, the thermostats are being turned up to help small businesses, The Sun reported.

Earlier, the outlet revealed that King Charles had installed a smart meter at Balmoral.

“The new monarch has also requested that the heating be abandoned on the Buckingham Palace swimming pool. The parliament insists that the move reflects the long-standing royal environmental credentials that have been added to the royal palace,” reports he said.

The accounts also show that wage costs saw one of the biggest increases in 2022-23, rising £3.4 million to £27.1 million. The £20.7 million surplus is mainly due to renovation work at Buckingham Palace.

Sir Michael Stevens, the privy purser, said it had been “a year of sadness, change and celebration, the likes of which our country has not witnessed for seven years”.

The opposition party in the UK also questioned Prince William as his household accounts showed that the private income of the Prince of Wales was almost 6 million pounds this year.
