Flash flood warnings are currently in effect in southeastern New York, including New York City. Thunderstorms hit the area and brought “heavy rain,” according to the National Weather Service.
The city said on its website, “A flood watch is in effect for the entire city between 2pm today, Sunday 7/9, and 6am Monday 7/10. A heavy rain event can cause flash flooding, especially in areas close to streams, creeks and rivers; low-lying and flood-prone areas; and poor urban areas.”
“Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Sunday morning. Staten Island and western Manhattan have a low risk of severe weather, such as hurricanes. Scattered showers may occur around 2pm,” he added.
City officials have said that floods can quickly wash away basements and pose a threat to human life. They encourage people to shift to higher areas.
Flooding has already begun to wreak havoc in many areas, including parts of the Lower Hudson Valley. The water quickly washed away roads, trapped people in cars and dumped debris across fields. Emergency responders are working to make rescue efforts.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York declared a state of emergency for Orange County on Sunday night, July 9. “I have declared a State of Emergency for Orange County, which has experienced life-threatening flooding in the past few hours. We are in close communication with local government officials and State agencies participating in the search and rescue efforts,” he wrote on Twitter.
In the same thread, he added, “Our Office of Emergency Management has been in touch with all affected communities to make sure they have what they need to respond quickly. And they will coordinate deployments of staff and resources from state agencies if local workers need help. ” Kathy confirmed that at least 13,000 homes are without power.

A West Point Military Police spokesman told CNN that there was severe flooding at the US Military Academy West Point in Orange County. Many people were trapped in their vehicles and had to swim out to safety.
State police are urging the public to avoid the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland County due to excessive flooding, NYSP public information officer Steven Nevel told Newsweek. “There are a lot of impounded drivers in Rockland County,” Steven said. “State Police along with local fire departments and EMS personnel are using personnel and equipment to assist these drivers and get them to safety as quickly as possible.”
