The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, on Sunday urged aspiring politicians and political office holders to emulate former Ogun State Governor, late Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, in their conducts and policy implementation.
In a statement celebrating the 34 years passage of the first civilian Governor of Ogun State, the state Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Hon. Wale Adedayo, said, “We celebrate the passage of an icon today, whose exemplary conduct in office has been a source of inspiration to many. Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo answered the final call on 14 April 1990, making it 34 years ago today that he joined our ancestors.
“His legacies, among many others, include Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State Television, Oba Lipede Market, Abeokuta, New Market, Ijebu Ode and the Ogun State Hotels (renamed Gateway Hotels). His tenure witnessed tremendous positive developments across the 20 local governments of Ogun State. He was not after personal or family benefits, but the interest of the common man/woman on the street in accordance with the ethos of Afenifere, “life more abundant for the people.”
“This is why we are asking those ready to join partisan politics and others who are already holding positions to act in the way Onabanjo did in order to bring succour to our people. A politician can leave a good name after his/her demise, which generations after the person would remember for the benefit of his/her descendants.”
