-Begins Week-Long Activities For 35th Convocation Ceremony

Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, has announced the commencement of activities for its 35th Convocation Ceremonies for the 2024/2025 academic session, scheduled to hold from Thursday, January 22 to Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the university’s main campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, disclosed this during a press conference held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the University Senate Chamber, Ago-Iwoye.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the convocation programme will span ten days and feature a mix of academic, cultural, religious, and social activities, beginning with a first-of-its-kind interactive meeting between graduating students and the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday.

Activities lined up for the ceremony include a health walk and special Jumat service on Friday, January 23, while Sunday, January 25, will feature a convocation service at the Chapel of Abundant Life. On Monday, January 26, the Vice-Chancellor will meet with PhD graduands, followed by a musical concert.

The programme continues on Tuesday, January 27, with a Cultural Day aimed at showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, alongside a convocation play by the Department of Performing Arts. Wednesday, January 28, will feature an Agriculture and Engineering Exhibition, as well as a novelty football match between female and male staff.

Professor Agboola explained that the award of first degrees will be conducted in two phases. On Thursday, January 29, graduands from the Faculties of Arts, Basic Medical Sciences, Education, Law, Pharmacy, and Social Sciences will be admitted to degrees. This will be followed on Friday, January 30, by graduands from the Faculties of Administration and Management Sciences, Agricultural Management and Rural Development, Agricultural Production and Renewable Resources, Clinical Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, and Science.

The convocation will climax on Saturday, January 31, with a convocation lecture titled “Repositioning Nigerian Universities as Innovation Hubs for Entrepreneurship and National Development”. The lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani. The grand finale will also feature the award of higher degrees and diplomas, as well as the conferment of honorary degrees.

Professor Agboola revealed that a total of 5,808 graduands will be graduating during the ceremony. Of this number, 147 earned First Class honours, 2,051 graduated with Second Class Upper Division, 2,927 with Second Class Lower Division, while 571 obtained Third Class degrees. Additionally, 26 graduands recorded Pass degrees, with 86 others uncategorised.

He further announced that a renowned Nigerian businessman, Mr Ayo Ojuroye, Founder of Optimus Bank and Chairman of Mango Asset Management, will be honoured with a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) honorary degree.

The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that Ajayi David Bamidel, of the Department of Civil Engineering, emerged as the Best Graduating Student, with an impressive CGPA of 4.89.

In a related development, Professor Agboola announced that an alumnus of the university, Omoba Murphy Adekoya, Chairman of Wosam Arena, will perform the ground-breaking ceremony of the Murphy Adekoya International Conference Centre on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The project will comprise a 5,000-seater main hall, two breakout halls, and supporting facilities.

On student welfare, the Vice-Chancellor disclosed that 5,613 OOU students have so far benefited from the NELFUND student loan scheme, while 1,270 students are currently awaiting payment approval.

Professor Agboola added that the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun, CON, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the convocation ceremony, which is expected to attract vice-chancellors of sister universities, scholars, traditional rulers, and eminent Nigerians from across the country.
