The Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Ogun State Chapter, on Thursday, 11th September 2025, hosted its annual International Spinal Cord Injury Day at the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) House, Leme, Abeokuta. The event, themed “Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection,” brought together stakeholders, government representatives, security agencies, medical professionals, development partners, and people living with spinal cord injuries, all united in the pursuit of awareness, advocacy, and empowerment.

In his opening remarks, Ogun SCIAN Chairman, Mr. Ayodele Awobona, reflected on the challenges and triumphs of living with spinal cord injury. He stressed that the theme was timely because “protecting the spine goes beyond avoiding accidents or injuries; it is about protecting lives, families, dignity, and hope.” Mr. Awobona used the occasion to call on the Federal Government and multinational organizations to establish a comprehensive rehabilitation center in Nigeria, noting that current facilities are grossly inadequate. He also appealed to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to urgently sign the State Disability Bill into law and set up a Disability Commission that would guarantee access, rights, and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

The Guest Speaker Dr. Kunle Ashimi, immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Ogun State Branch explained that spinal cord injuries are mostly preventable, with road traffic crashes, unsafe work environments, and domestic falls accounting for the majority of cases. He emphasized the need for prevention through public enlightenment, road safety measures, and healthy lifestyle practices. Dr. Ashimi cautioned that once an injury occurs, the cost of rehabilitation becomes lifelong and often unaffordable for the average Nigerian. He therefore urged government, NGOs, and corporate bodies to prioritize prevention, early intervention, provision of assistive devices, and social inclusion for survivors.

In her goodwill message, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Motunrayo Adeleye, represented by the Director of Rehabilitation Services, Mrs. Olekama, commended Ogun SCIAN for its resilience and consistency in raising awareness on spinal cord injuries. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to partner with the Association in the area of rehabilitation, empowerment, and inclusive social programs that would give survivors a sense of belonging and dignity.

Security agencies also lent their voices. The Ogun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), represented by Deputy Commandant Idowu, expressed the Corps’ readiness to continue supporting persons with disabilities through its disability desks and inclusive security services. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun State Command, represented by the Sector Commander himself, Corps Commander Fashakin, noted that spinal cord injuries are often linked to road crashes and pledged the Corps’ commitment to sustained accident prevention campaigns across the state, he further congratulated survivors for not giving up on themselves urging that a good future await them.

Other partners present, including the New Era Initiative for Persons with Disabilities, lauded Ogun SCIAN for keeping the advocacy alive and called for stronger collaboration among disability organizations to push for inclusive policies and grassroots empowerment.

The occasion was not only about speeches but also about real-life impact. Staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Abeokuta Branch, graced the event with donations of two commode wheelchairs, a generator, adult diapers, and medical supplies. Their gesture was described by Ogun SCIAN as “a lifeline” that would improve day-to-day living conditions of her members.

Empowerment was a major highlight of the day. Two members received wheelchairs, restoring their mobility and independence. A woman was empowered with a deep freezer to expand her petty trading business. A young man was supported with a 2.5KVA generator and a television set to start a small-scale gaming center. In addition, all members benefitted from food packs and medical supplies distributed at the event. The empowerment items, though modest, were described by recipients as seeds of hope that could grow into sustainable livelihoods.

The emotional high point of the event came during the testimonies of members who shared their journeys of resilience after spinal cord injury. Their stories of pain, adaptation, and courage brought tears and inspiration to the audience, underscoring the importance of inclusion and collective support. A minute of silence was also observed in honor of late elder member, Mr. Babayemi Ogunyele, whose life and contributions to the Association were fondly remembered.

In her vote of thanks, Ogun SCIAN Woman Leader, Mrs. Victoria Adeosun, expressed deep appreciation to all supporters and partners who made the event possible. “Your generosity has turned challenges into opportunities and despair into hope,” she said, stressing that the Association would continue to stand as a voice and a pillar of support for persons with spinal cord injury in the state.

The 2025 Spinal Cord Injury Day in Abeokuta was thus more than a commemoration it was a statement of resilience, a platform for empowerment, and a call to action for a society that truly leaves no one behind.
