Fear as herdsmen attack leaves Ondo residents dead, many kidnapped

Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Thursday, attacked a community in Ondo State, killing some residents and kidnapping others.

The incident reportedly occurred along a rural axis when the gunmen ambushed unsuspecting residents.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers opened fire, causing panic as people fled into nearby bushes for safety.

Those abducted were reportedly taken away on foot into forested areas, while the attackers fled the scene shortly after.

Residents said the bodies of those killed were recovered hours later and buried according to local customs.

A community source said the attack had heightened fear, with many residents now sleeping in neighbouring towns.

Following the attack, security agencies were alerted and patrol teams were deployed to the area.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident and assured residents that efforts were underway to track the attackers.

A police source said collaboration with local vigilantes had been strengthened to prevent further attacks.

The state government also condemned the attack, describing it as a threat to peace and security.

Residents called on the Federal Government to address insecurity linked to herdsmen activities across the South-West.

As of the time of filing this report, the abducted victims were yet to regain freedom, while fear lingered in the community.
