As US President Joe Biden arrived in the UK on Sunday, he spent the night at the US embassy in London, closing the day’s commitments by meeting with King Charles. Joe Biden skipped the coronation ceremony in May. The meeting caused chaos as Joe Biden appeared to have breached royal protocol by touching King Charles III during the arrival ceremony at Windsor Castle.

The King also seemed to lose his cool after one of the Welsh Guards at the castle apparently spent more time than engaging the US President in conversation. In videos shared on social media, the US President is seen placing his hand on the King’s back as they review the Welsh Guards assembled on Windsor Square. The king was making a similar gesture a few moments later.

But a video sparked reactions on social media in which King Charles was seen trying to rush Joe Biden at one point as they reviewed the Guard of Honour.

As the president of the United States was talking to one of the soldiers who was inspecting him, he failed to follow the king’s advice to continue. The king appeared to be surprised and gestured at the guard after which the “confused” president moved away.

Did Joe Biden break the monarchy?

A Buckingham Palace source told PEOPLE that Joe Biden did not breach protocol and said the monarch was “absolutely comfortable” with the meeting.

“What a wonderful sign of passion and love it is between individuals and their countries,” they said.

Did Joe Biden and King Charles ever meet?

King Charles and Joe Biden have met several times during public life, including two recent meetings during the Cop26 conference in Glasgow and the Buckingham Palace reception in 2021. In both meetings, the leaders talked about climate change .
