Availability of adequate and efficient healthcare professionals has been identified as central to improved service delivery in actualising the present administration’s policy thrusts on health.
The Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Ministry of Health, Dr. Adesanya Ayinde made this known during the 2019 Budget Performance assessment to the Ministry of Health by the House Committee on Health at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Dr. Ayinde noted that one of the challenges in the health sector was inadequate staffing in the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the State, saying the current administration had already demonstrated commitment to its vision for qualitative healthcare by giving facelifts to some of the State’s secondary health facilities within its first 100 days of governance.
He pointed out that most of the facilities were in dire need of sufficient staff, particularly junior workers such as cleaners, gardeners and messengers, adding that more doctors, nurses and other core healthcare professionals should also be recruited.
“We all know that it is only when residents enjoy good health that they can be productive. Therefore, the health sector should occupy the topmost spot of the echelon of government’s priorities. We are pleased that our Governor has demonstrated the understanding of this reality”, he said.
Reacting, the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Honourable Adeyanju Adegoke expressed the intention of the State House of Assembly to work with the Executive arm of government to bring qualitative and affordable healthcare delivery to all the entire citizenry.
He advised the Ministry of Health and Primary Healthcare Development Board to put in place, a robust system for monitoring activities of their staff in remote primary health centres.
